Where to start? After such a turbulent week, there aren't many positives for Manchester United boss David Moyes. Similar stories against both, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton will leave the United manager scratching his head to how United have only scraped one point in those two games. With all due respect to the two clubs, United had numerous chances to put the game to bed.
With saying that, maybe it was just me, but United never looked like that they were going to keep a clean sheet against Everton. Even in the closing stages when a conventional United domination was imminent, it never really came and they uncharacteristically looked vulnerable on the counter-attack. To make matters worse, Moyes declined to put a date on Robin van Persie's return, which will worry many United fans as they look lackluster upfront with a desperate need of quality lacking.
Looking at the wingers, it's quite unbelievable. Over the last decade, Manchester United have been world renowned for their wing-men. The likes of David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and George Best, just to name a few, have made the strength of the wide areas at United as a trademark. Looking at those areas at the moment, is frankly, disappointing.
At the moment, it seems Antonio Valencia is the best of a bad situation. He keeps showing glimpses of his superb form two years ago, but fails to recapture it for any sustained period of time. It seems Ashley Young has fallen out of favor after his dives and poor performances and with Nani being given a 5 year contract at the beginning of the year, it looks rather dim in the wide areas.
One must wonder, what does Wilfred Zaha have to do to get into this United team? The former Crystal Palace man has been playing for Manchester United's U21 team, but in the Community Shield and Capital One Cup tie against Norwich, there were glimpses of a talented winger there.
If I was Moyes, (which I'm somewhat glad I'm not at this moment in time!) I would strongly consider recalling Nick Powell from Wigan. The young midfielder has been a constant starter for Wigan in the Championship but also in the Europa Cup. He's been scoring excellent goals and he could be the missing ingredient for United. His creativity and range of passing will ease the pressure off the ridiculous reliance on Ryan Giggs, who at 40, was helpless against a rejuvenated Gareth Barry and ever consistent James McCarthy.
