Newcastle defeat proves Fergie jumped ship at the right time

After United were convincingly defeated against Newcastle at Old Trafford and received their 5th defeat of the season, their 3rd at home, questions will be asked about David Moyes whether it's justified or not.

Many will start with, 'Why did he fire the backroom staff?' As Sir Alex Ferguson aged, it's without doubt that Rene Meulensteen and Mike Phelan were important figures for the former United manager. Meulensteen's man management in particular was vital for many of United's successes in recent seasons. 

But this team are the reigning champions of the Barclays Premier League. 

Unfortunately, United have been a victim of their own success. Last year's title-winning season will be seen as one of Sir Alex Ferguson's biggest achievements with the team he possessed, however for the team itself, it papered over the cracks. 

Many United fans knew last season, that the creativity in midfield wasn't there. Michael Carrick had a fantastic season and at times, carried the midfield. With Robin van Persie and Rooney doing the business, it wasn't such a massive problem last year.

In United's last three games against Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Newcastle, the midfield has been a target for the opposition to dominate. Taking the Red Devil's latest defeat as an example, Pardew recognised that his team could control parts of the game if he outnumbered the United midfielders because they wouldn't be able to handle the pressure. He was proven right.

Sir Alex was portrayed to have left Moyes a dream team. A team of champions. Yet what many are only seeming to realise is that due to his incredible man-managment skills, he elevated their performances to another level. At the moment, many players of this United team look extremely ordinary. It's up for debate, but they could arguably have one of the worst midfields in the top half of the table. 

With United's poor start to the season, Moyes' job will come under scrutiny. It's understandable for many to say Moyes has never managed a top club, so he should never have been given the job, but he's safely maneuvered his first term in the Champions League group stages so he have the potential to steer United out of this decline. 

In addition, getting rid of the United manager won't solve their problems. It won't bring in a star midfielder any quicker, it won't help the cohesion of the team and it definitely won't help the credibility of the club after giving the Scotsman a six-year deal. 

This is still very much Sir Alex Ferguson's team and for Moyes can only try to get the best out of them. Remember, Sir Alex won last year's title with many, many, more years of experience then Moyes has, even though he was the manager of Everton for more then 10 years.

Of course, it's extremely disappointing if you're a United fan, seeing your team decline from such promise but this a storm they must weather together and the rewards may be prosperous once Moyes invests in top quality players.
